Pump Shaft Case Study

Posted in Machines and Reliability, Process

Corrosion Assessment on pump shaft saves over £10k p.a.

Axiom was requested to assess the regular failure of a pump shaft on acid duty cycling that was being replaced every 3 months at a cost of around £2,000 plus downtime for each replacement.

Material investigation of the shaft showed that the original specification had been for Hastelloy C276 which was clearly not delivering the expected performance and lifetime.

From a better understanding of the chemicals the pump was processing Axiom recommended a switch to Hastelloy B2 material which has been in process for more than 2 years without need for replacement.

As a result the client has saved 8 replacement cycles at £2k each and also substantial process downtime so in total the savings are already in excess of £20,000.
